And the winner is... Eduardo Souto de Moura

Portugese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura has become the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. His practice is often associated with the conversion of the Santa Maria do Bouro Convent the Braga Football Stadium (Euro 2005) and more recently the Cinema House for Manoel de Oliveira. Perhaps his most recognisable work however is the 2009 Paula Rêgo Museum with it's distinct red stained truncated pyramidal roof forms. He joins his teacher and mentor Alvara Siza who was awarded in 1992 as the second Portguese architect to win the prize.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize is the highest professional honour, bestowed on
living architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and committment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.

SANAA for the win... sorry Holl

Architects Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa of Japan have become the 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureates. The couple's practice, SANAA is often associated with such international projects such as the the Kunstline Theatre + Cultural Centre in the Netherlands and the Rolex Learning Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. Perhaps their most recognisable work is the glass pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art, with it's refined composition of lightness and transparency physically mirroring the context and inviting the viewer within. Sejima and Nishizawa are the second duo to be awarded the Pritzker and the 3rd 4th award for Japan (previously Ando, Tange & Maki).

The Pritzker Architecture Prize is the highest professional honour, bestowed on a living architect and represents an accolade of a body of work and it's contribution to the field of architecture.

Who will win??

Fast Company lays their predictions for who will walk away with this year's Pritzker Architecture Prize to be announced tomorrow. Obviously following suit - our own polls and predictions (see side bar), they have New York based Architect Steven Holl as the front runner though would love to see Cameron Sinclair/ Architecture for Humanity steal the show.

Pritzker Prize ::: 2010 Prize - revisted

Due to the overwhelming votes in favour of Steven Holl - approximately 50% at last count, we've decided to revise the polls on the 2010 Pritzker Prize. Instead the we are making it a three way poll Holl against Japanese architects Shigeru Ban, known for his innovative work with paper and Toyo Ito equally admired for his highly conceptual works. Aside from the previous laureates, these architects are defining contemporary architecture in their own unique way.

and the winner is....

Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has become the 2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. His practice is often associated with the Kolumba Art Museum and more recently the Brother Klaus Chapel both in Germany. Perhaps his most recognisable work however is the Therme Vals, a sedate modern spa in Switzerland, that has acquired media sensation often being used as a backdrop fashion shoots and advertisements. Following Herzog de Meuron in 2001, he is the second Swiss architect to win the award.

RIP - Sverre Fehn

1924 - 2009, acclaimed architect highly noted for the Norwegian Pavilion at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels and most recently the Norwegian Glacier Museum died of natural causes on the 23rd February. Fehn began his practice in 1954 after a brief stint with Jean Prouvé and became a prominent post-war architect, helping to influence the architecture of Norway. Fehn was honoured with architecture's highest award the Pritzker Prize in 1997.

French architect Jean Nouvel has become the 2008 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. His practice Ateliers Jean Nouvel is often associated with the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Foundation Cartier, and more recently the Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Le Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. He's the first, actually the second, French architect to win the award.

Rogers in 07

Richard Rogers of the United Kingdom becomes the 2007 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. His practice the Richard Rogers Partnership is often associated with the Centre Pompidou, the Lloyds of London, and more recently the National Assembly for Wales and Madrids Bajaras Airport. He's the fourth British national to win the award joining Foster, Hadid, & Stirling.
