on the boards: Pedregal Shopping Centre
The Pedregal Shopping Centre in Mexico City, by Pascal Architects is designed to be a beacon in an otherwise domestic area. The project consists of two commercial levels and a roof garden and two underground parking levels over 7,000 sqm. The façade is composed of large irregular perforations cut from zinc plate that is further pierced by boxes of yellow translucent laminated glass.

the standard ISO container or ITU (Intermodal Transport Units) is designed to be loaded and sealed intact onto container ships, railroad cars, planes, or trucks. Although there is no standard dimensions for containers the 40 ft (12 m) container is the most popular container worldwide and is typically 8 ft wide by 8'6 high. There are 18 million containers worldwide (2005) and 26% of them originate from China.

on the boards: Integrated Resource Centre
Architects Schacht | Aslani have recently published images of their proposal for a 45,000 sq ft Integrated Resource Centre to be located at the North Seattle Community College. The project is targeting LEED Silver certification when complete in 2010, providing office accomodation for staff as well as additional classrooms.

House of the Week 012: Ant Farm House
the Ant Farm House in Taipei, designed by architects Xrange gets its name from how it spatially interlocks around an existing stone structure, in some cases creating narrow rooms between the old and new exteriors. The concept is further emphasized on the elevation of the 500 sqm residence, by the fenestration and surface finish.

An early and classic exemplar of the "International Style", which hovers above a grass plane on thin concrete pilotti, with strip windows, and a flat roof with a deck area, ramp, and a few contained touches of curvaceous walls.

PBS KIDS GO!'s hit TV series Design Squad teamed up with the Intel Foundation to challenge kids across the country to enter the recycle-themed "Trash to Treasure" competition. The winner of the grand prize was a twist on the traditional geodesic dome but largely made from discarded plastic to provide temporary shelter to the homeless.

RIP - Sverre Fehn
1924 - 2009, acclaimed architect highly noted for the Norwegian Pavilion at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels and most recently the Norwegian Glacier Museum died of natural causes on the 23rd February. Fehn began his practice in 1954 after a brief stint with Jean Prouvé and became a prominent post-war architect, helping to influence the architecture of Norway. Fehn was honoured with architecture's highest award the Pritzker Prize in 1997.

The layout comprises of a spiralling atrium around a public courtyard whilst the exterior is wrapped by a double-ventilated façade of metal panels.via

House of the Week 011: Raumati House
The Raumati House in New Zealand is a seaside family residence designed by Parsonson Architects that allows view to the beach whilst maintaining protection from the wind and sun with a casual and flexible layout. The elevation mimics the profile of the landscape with a palette of materials that flow from inside to out.

The Taliesin Prototype
The Mod.FabTM, although designed by Taliesin, the desert based studio started by Frank Lloyd Wright, the prefabricated units don't bear the typical warmth of material choice typically associated with the master architect. Added the use of colour and minimal interiors reflect a more Bauhaus aesthetic. Nonetheless the 600 sq ft prototype, built at Taliesin West is another intelligent and welcome addition to the host of modern prefabricated structures now available. The prefab structure when built is meant to be "unplugged," relying on low-consumption fixtures, rainwater harvesting, greywater re-use, natural ventilation, solar orientation, and photovoltaics.

Bering Strait Ideas Competition

House of the Week 010: Haus W
The 130 sqm residence in Hamburg, Germany by Kraus Schonberg Architects is partially submerged to provide privacy yet keep a sense of openness. The glazed lower level contains the living areas with views into garden, whilst the varying upper floor levels - finished in engineered timber on the exterior contain the more private spaces wrapped around the central atrium.

mobile solutions for housing
The EDAR company is a charitable organisation that provides unique mobile shelters to those living on the streets. EDAR which stands for "everyone deserves a roof" is designed around a four-wheeled mobile unit which carries belongings and unfolds into a tent-like sleeping enclosure with a bed at night.

House of the Week 009: 700 Palms
700 Palms is a family house in Venice Beach, California by Ehrlich Architects. The residence boasts a dynamic series of adjustable canvas sails hung from exposed frames spanning from the eaves to the boundary wall that both shades and creates additional space on the narrow lot. Internal spaces open entirely to the landscape to increase natural ventilation, and the structure is kept to the natural patina of weathered materials.

House of the Week 008: Blackwell House
A modern house in Arkansas designed by architect Marlon Blackwell and his wife Meryati (a partner in MBP) for their young family. The bridge-like structure was built over a seasonal creek.
The façade is finished with horizontally lain redwood strips that act as a rain screen and the elevation is punctuated with long, black framed windows.
