Ecological Design In The Tropics (EDITT) is a proposal by TR Hamzah & Yeang for a 26-story high-rise constructed of recycled and recyclable materials featuring photovoltaic panels, natural ventilation, and a biogas generation plant all wrapped within an insulating living wall that covers half of its surface area. The eco-tower is designed to collect rainwater and re-distribute its grey-water for both irrigation and toilet flushing with an estimated 55% self-sufficiency and a photovoltaic system that can supply 40% of its energy needs.

Morphosis has recently completed a housing project in a suburban neighbourhood in Madrid, Spain that explores a social model recalling village topologies, as an alternative to the faceless block of flats. The outcome appears to be a project out of scale with its context, with the privacy created in the narrow streets contradicted by the scale of the row of flats place on the perimeter. The use of heat stacks, as passive climate control is keenly integrated into the design as are the porusity of walls, staggered openings and the landscaped trellis.

Just back from Louisville, where I attended the Idea Festival where Bjarke Ingels of BIG spoke about his firm and the Designs on the Future City

Bjarke is an eloquent speaker, and the work of BIG impressively melds concept, formal analysis into built form. It was a treat to attend the festival.

Yves Saint Laurent has commissioned French Architect, and recent Pritzker prize winner Jean Nouvel to design a limited edition bottle for L'Homme. The fragrance released in 2006, comprises of an upturned test tube, somewhat phallic-shaped and referencing his recent architecture proposals in Qatar to Spain, sits on a black hexagonal base with a green float bearing the YSL logo.

preserving modernity
Architecturally, New Orleans is perhaps best known for its Creole cottages, shotgun houses, and the mixed-influences of the French Quarter. But there is a small yet important concentration of Regional Modernism in the Big Easy and local Modernists are doing their damnedest to preserve it. Let’s just hope its not too late.

Roberto Burle Marx is the questionably the most seminal figure in contemporary landscape design. His use of tropical foliage and vegetation was of such artistry as to redefine the genre.
This amazingly small publication, is actually a fair account of his work. The photographs are mostly b&w and not that impressive, however the collection of sketches enclosed are brilliant. The book is also blessed with some of his lesser known projects outside of the city.
No matter how you look at it this book is a bargain, and an excellent complement to a library on landscape design. Don't however let it be your only insight into the talent of Burle Marx.

Architecture Schools
The Sundance Channel will be hosting a documentary plainly dubbed Architecture Schools a mini-series following the design-build programme at Tulane University. The project, to build a sustainable, design-forward home for a family returning to New Orleans is produced and directed by architects Michael Selditch and Stan Bertheaud and tells the story of twelve idealistic architecture students who are bringing a social mission into the classroom by working with communities and populations that do not traditionally have access to architects.

City of Sound has produced a stellar post on the State Library of Queensland, Australia - the collaboration of architects Donovan Hill & Peddle Thorpe. Despite the bias, the criticism is thorough and contextual against other library marquees notably the Bibliothèque National as well as the Seattle Public Library and is an enriching history lesson into the geospatial history of Queensland. The shortfalls of this literary contribution is not in the writing, nor the photographs which so beautifully illustrate the building and its surroundings. Rather, a hunger that emerges for more - perhaps supressed by the inclusion of drawings (plans, section, etc).

The Olympic Delivery Authority is aiming to deliver on its statement to make the 2012 Olympic Games in London the first sustainable one with this building. The Energy Centre will be part of a primary electrical substation within the Olympic Park to form the new utilities network that is being built across the British city. The Olympic Energy Centre when constructed will be both sustainable and flexible enough to integrate future technologies as developed in the years to come.

HdM (Swiss Architects Herzog de Meuron) have brought some well needed elegance to their proposal for the extension to the Tate Modern in London. The previous imagery for the project was a stocky translucent "appendage" to the Tates original brick facade. The design has developed taking cues from the building's history and the architects' experience in museum building and environmental focus.

twist of fate
On June 2008, Alain Robert popularised as Spiderman, scaled the recently completed New York Times Building protesting amongst other things Global Warming. The 52 story tower in Manhattan by Renzo Piano and FXFOWLE, is one of the greenest buildings in the city, wrapped with a brise soleil to minimize solar gain. Ironically, the sunscreens were used by Roberts and two subsequent climbers as ladders, and subsequently are being removed from the lower portion of the building, thus minimizing its solar protection and energy efficiency.

Peter Stutchbury wins the first prize for an extreme housing competition in Cherepovets, Russia. The competition was Living Steel's 3rd International Architecture Competition for Sustainable Housing, which presented architects with the task of creating single-family, detached housing that are both affordable and environmentally sustainable.
