Z-house, located on the eastern coastline of Denmark, is designed to enhance the great view towards the sea, consisting of outdoor terraces on different levels with ramps leading from the surrounding garden to the indoor areas. At the central part of the house a large water-wall creates a vertical connection through the house.

Rip Curl

Rip Curl Canyon an installation by Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues at Rice Gallery in Texas. Ball and Nogues have transformed their architectural training of space and the understanding of construction to fabricate installations that transform the way people interact with environments. "Using 4000 sheets of precision-cut cardboard, Ball-Nogues will create an inhabitable, rolling landscape that extends from the gallery’s floor to its ceiling."

Rogers wins Lion

Richard Rogers wins his first Lion (RIBA Stirling Prize) for the Barajas Airport in Madrid, not to be outdone his National Assembly in Wales was also nominated for the prize.

The prize awarded to architects annually for the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture, has managed to evade Rogers despite his international popularity.

I never did apologise for the absent posts last week. I've been rather busy doing some on site management of the construction of 60 houses in the north of Montserrat.

This is an example of one of the houses designed by our department. The other four house types are designed by DLN Consultants, Barbados.

The "inspiration" for this latest creation, the architect claims, was the shape of the Colorado rockies.

Solar Glass + Ventilated Glass

Solar glazing is becoming more and more of a choice for architects building glazed facades. The solar cells and automated ventilation system are integrated into the Akademie Mont-Cenis complex (via Treeghugger). When its warmer the glass louvers open to allow cool air in, whilst the warm air is expelled through roof vents.

World Habitat Day

Today, 2 October 2006, the International Union of Architects and UN-Habitat are celebrating World Habitat Day and the World Day of Architecture.

Within the framework of this commemoration, the UIA Work Programme on bioclimatic architecture and renewable energy sources (ARES) is announcing an international competition, to be launched on 1 November 2006, for the design of emergency shells and settlement units to house the local population following natural disasters.

Perhaps the world's most ambitious redevelopment is underway in India, with more than 500 acres of shanties and unremarkable buildings transformed into five organised, self-sustained sectors all part of a 10,000 acre plan for Mumbai’s belated makeover scheme.“We have decided on a land use plan,” explains Mehta. “So for each sector, we know where a park, school, hospital will be located.

Also, detailed specifications for buildings will be given to the developers.” That will include art deco buildings and mandatory eco-housing criteria—including rainwater harvesting, water recycling, renewable energy systems.

The Yestermorrow Design/Build School is offering a 17 day Design Build Class in the Dominican Republic from Jan 3rd - 20th 2007. The class is a unique opportunity for students to have a design build experience, travel in a foreign country, and work with a variety of architecture and other related design students from different schools (including from the Dominican Republic). The site of the class is the entrance to some amazing limestone caves that are filled with ancient art and are currently part of the Dominican National Park but still in need of greater public awareness.

International ideas competition: Carlsberg

Carlsberg hereby invites all urban designers, architects, designers, engineers, artists, architects students etc. to take part in an open international idea competition for a development plan for Carlsberg in Copenhagen.

At the end of 2008, Carlsberg Breweries will discontinue its beer production on the site in Copenhagen where the brewery was founded, leaving behind a 33-hectare area. Carlsberg`s dream is to create a vibrant city district on this site, which will combine old and new.

32nd annual Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation competition

The competition was organized in 1973 by Ken Roberts, a talented Dallas architect who passed away the following year at age 34. The Dallas AIA chapter renamed the annual competition in his honor. That tradition continues in its thirty-first year.

All entries must be of an architectural nature, and must be authored by one individual. Drawings can be in the form of plans, elevations, sections, or perspectives, and can be conceptual or final renderings; exploration and innovation in unique techniques are encouraged. While there is no limit to the number of entries one can submit, submissions awarded in past Ken Roberts competitions are not eligible. Sketchbooks as a whole will not be accepted; a single, clearly marked page within the sketchbook may be entered.

holiday blog

a bit of modernism in Jamaica....on vacation for a few days, and thought I'd share some of the works that inspired me growing up.

Amongst the acres of suburbia North of the city capital lies this Modernist gem. The elegance of this structure is its simplicity; a timber box perched atop a concrete base with its exposed timber lattice support. The Rolls Royce parked in the porte-cochere resembles Corbusian photos of the 1920s & 30s

Still in Atlanta, GA

Had a walk through downtown Altanta today, and what a shock. It was about noon, and not a soul was on the streets. A few cars rolled passed, and the parking garages (of which I saw numerous) were all filled. Its as if everyone doesn't leave their hermetically sealed environments...granted its really hot today.

I did find an interesting quote that was part of a land-art project adjacent to the Georgia State Communications Dept, "...why the streets are so crooked is, that every man built on his land just to suit himself..."

NI to go Green

Northern Ireland has proposed to change building regulations to make it mandatory for all new buildings built from 2008 onward to use renewable energy. "[It will] apply to all new homes, company and public buildings [and] make micro-generation, such as solar panels to heat hot water, solar photo voltaic panels on roofs to generate electricity or small wind turbines for houses mandatory".

Conceived in 1999 by The Architectural Review, the AR Awards are intended to bring international recognition to a talented new generation of architects and designers up to the age of 45. The Awards have attracted entries from more than 80 countries, representing every inhabited continent. They are the biggest and best awards for young architects in the world and gives away £15,000 in prize money.

The AR Awards for Emerging Architecture celebrate excellence in completed work. Entries can be made for any building, interior, landscape, urban or product design. The deadline for receipt of entries is Tuesday 12 September 2006 .
