It is with the deepest and sincerest regrets to inform my readers of the passing of noted Latin Modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer 1907 - 2012. The acclaimed and highly influential architect and political activist died of natural causes on the 6th December - 2 weeks short of his 105 birthday.

Oscar Niemeyer began his own practice, after a brief stint within the office of Lúcio Costa and Carlos Leão that stemmed collaborations with Le Corbusier. His architecture whilst in dozen of countries, and has come to define the essence and culture of Brazil and moreover the whimsical forms of Latin Modernism. His accomplished work of fluid and free-formed concrete sculpture spanned decades and in 1988 he was awarded with profession's highest honour, the Pritzker Prize.

Up until his last breath, there was no greater living architect than Oscar Niemeyer.

House of the Week 117: Palácio da Alvorada

the official residence Brazil’s president, Palácio da Alvorada was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer completed in 1958. The 7,000 m² house sits on peninsula at the margins of Lake Paranoá in Brasilia and houses not only the private residence of the president but a medical centre, building administration and a large reception area for official functions. In 2004 the residence underwent renovations at the cost of $18.4 million funded by IPHAN (Brazilian Institute for the Historic and Artistic Heritage).

Interiors : Copán Apartment Renovation

This project entailed the conversion of a 140m² three bedroom apartment originally designed by Oscar Niemeyer into an open space contemporary loft by architects, Felipe Hess and Renata Pedrosa. The spaces of the loft are loosely defined, achieved rather by the play of materials and textures - the existing raw concrete, exposed and distressed, exposed piping, stark white walls and the symmetry of the ceiling structure.
