Applications are now being accepted for the fourteenth annual Glenn Murcutt Architecture Master Class to take place in Australia next July at 'Riversdale', the Boyd Education Centre on the shores of the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney. The now famous event has attracted practising architects, academics, postgraduates and some senior students from 70 nations around the world since its inception in 2001. The two-week residential program consists of a design based studio, led by Pritzker Prize Laureate Glenn Murcutt and other eminent architects and teachers Richard Leplastrier, Brit Andresen, Peter Stutchbury and former Dean of Architecture at the University of Newcastle, Australia, Lindsay Johnston. The studio program is supported by tutorials, lectures, and guided tour visits to significant buildings by the 'masters'.

The Architecture Foundation Australia is a not-for-profit organisation.

House of the Week 171: Zero Cottage

The Zero cottage is an 1,150 ft^s free-standing extension composed of a workshop with living spaces set over it. The living space includes a two-bedroom flat, studio apartment and storefront space. Designed by David Baker and Partners, Zero Cottage presented an opportunity to explore advanced sustainable design, construction techniques, materials and technologies, with a goal of achieving Passive House and Net-Zero Energy certification - the first of its kind in San Francisco.

New Work ::: Green Dot Public School

Brooks + Scarpa have recently completed a school for 500 students in Inglewood, Los Angeles. The block wide site is located in a poverty stricken community of residential and light industrial buildings and is adjacent to a busy freeway. The 52,000 ft² facility hovers over the western portion of the site, freeing the ground floor areas and in contrast to typical academic big box precedents. The southern elevation is clad with solar panels that currently provides 75% of the school's energy needs whilst simultaneously shading the building.

The Beijing Welcome Centre designed by JDS Architects (Julien de Smedt) was conceived to be the gateway to a new sustainable industry park. The building envelope is manipulated to maximize environmental and contextual benefits. The number of pragmatic yet scientific adjustments to the form of the building to minimize heat gain during the winter, increase air flow, minimize glare, etc promotes the notion of a low tech sustainability.

Swedish city Gothenburg faces a challenge comparable in size with the industrial revolution: to become a sustainable city. Kjellgren Kaminsky architecture, in collaboration with a team of local volunteers, have created a vision for a sustainable Gothenburg.

New Work ::: Wetland Folly

This otherworldly outdoor dining pavilion (sighted on Remodelista) was designed by South African-trained, New Zealand-based Lance and Nicky Herbst of Herbst Architects. The simple outdoor structure - a clever folly designed to enhance the beach lifestyle for its owners, was conceived to be used for light cooking, dining and relaxing. The pavilion is made of a simple structural frame over-clad with awnings, screens and translucent sheet blending rustic elements (a timber frame clad with rough manuka sticks) with modern materials (translucent sheets of polycarbonate siding).

Landscape Architects OLIN design with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and KeppieDesign have won an international design competition in Aberdeen, Scotland. The design takes reference from the City Garden with its the dramatic topography of Aberdeen by criss-crossing a series of paths across the Denburn Valley to reconnect the urban fabric creating a reinvigorated green heart of the city.

10 Rules for a Sustainable Architecture in Jamaica

Architects have a large responsibility to design sustainable solutions for the built environment that are responsive to the social, economic and environmental needs of the local context and people. Buildings form a large part of the built environment and are large consumers of energy to facilitate the trade of goods and services. It is therefore important that we construct and design solutions that help to lower energy and maintenance costs while increasing the efficiency of the functions they are conceived to serve.
