House of the Week 170: Casa GR

Designed by Brazilian practice Bernardes + Jacobsen Architecture, Casa GR sits on a near 600m² suburban lot in São Sebastião. The bedroom spaces, located on the upper levels float above in a white framed metal box, shielded from the tropical heat with vertical timber screens. The living and kitchen areas open to the lush landscape at times with double height spaces to engage with the family areas above.

In the 2014 IKEA catalog reference is made to the annual event Park(ing) Day. The parklet concept, turning parking spaces into landscaped gathering places is scheduled on Sept. 20 worldwide.

House of the Week 169: House Gepo

From the untethered landscape of the rear garden, House Gepo appears as a floating concrete box. The openness of the glass clad communal level integrates the interior of the ground floor with the site. Designed by Open Y Office, the material use inside serves to divide the spaces into private and public areas, whilst on the exterior softens an otherwise industrial aesthetic of steel, concrete and glass.

On the Boards: Windhover Contemplative Centre

The Windhover Contemplative Centre designed by Aidlin Darling Design was conceived to promote quiet reflection and personal renewal. Located in front of Roble Hall at the campus of Stanford University, the building will be accessed through a long, private garden sheltered from its surroundings by a line of tall bamboo and adjacent to a natural oak grove. The 4,000 ft² spiritual retreat will be constructed of thick rammed earth walls and finished in natural wood surfaces.
