on the boards: Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre
The site located at North Parade in downtown Kingston, Jamaica is to become the new home of the Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre. Designed by the architects at the Urban Development Corporation (UDCJA), the scheme involves the renovation of 4 existing buildings to house an interpretation centre, conference rooms, staff offices and commercial facilities.

Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects' competition entry for the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. The design consists of a large translucent volume, populated by large truncated shapes and capped with a ribbed parasol roof.

New York City has unveiled a new design for sidewalk sheds – the wood and steel structures built to protect pedestrians walking alongside buildings under construction has remained unchanged since the 1950s. The new design, the result of the urbanSHED competition awarded to Young-Hwan Choi, will reduce the impact on businesses, increase pedestrian safety and available space on sidewalks.

Okay last cube for today... the second place entry in the 2009 Evolvo Skyscraper competition by Nicola & Adelaide Marchi, for a 400-meter high building (containing recreational, cultural, residential functions) spanning the river Seine in the historic district of Paris.

Dove of Peace is a Protestant Church in Inner Mongolia designed by Chinese architects Sunlay Design Group, that draws inspiration from the rolling hills of the Ordos area.

DEVE Architects in Copenhagen, Denmark have been awarded one of the Europan 10 Architecture competition prizes for a project to revitalize an industrial harbour area in Augustenborg. The proposal aimed to both address the historical and spatial implications of building in the city with a scheme that reinforces the municipality's plan to be carbon neutral by 2030.

And another box... this one by London based architects ACME and their competition entry for a United Nations memorial to be located in South Korea. The memorial proposed a 1,500 seating assembly, two conference halls, a theatre and spaces for exhibitions in a self contained cube that represented in it's form the coming together of nations to make one.

The Administration and Information Centre at the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China by Aedas architects is a complicated program of teaching, student services and administration housed in a singular building. The proposal combines these functions forming the edges of a cube with internal voids that create opportunity to engage with the surrounding context.

And the winner is??
The masses have voted (twice) and it is widely felt (at least by our humble viewers) that architect Steven Holl will likely be awarded architecture's high honour, the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Let's hope our prediction holds true

Great video (except up to 2:06 into it where it assumes the solution to suburbanism is new urbanism versus urban or city living but that's another discussion kiddies). It was the Winner of the Congress for New Urbanism CNU 17 video contest.

The Bungoma House proposed for a site in Kenya is centred around an internal courtyard that provides view and ventilation to the rooms. The proposal, part of the One Acre Fund Housing project is intended to be handed over to a family on completion. Construction to commence January 2010.

:output student competition
Works produced by students are often only shown to a limited audience, this competition aims to change that. :output is the largest international student competition for students of design and architecture and judged by an international panel. Registration is open and closes the 15th February 2010 - Grand Prize is € 3,000.
